Bombus borealis, commonly named the northern amber bumble bee is a species of bumble bee found in fields and woodlands throughout the United States and Canada. Like most bumble bees, they form small underground colonies with a single queen and a -few drones, with most of the bees being female workers. Queens are large (18-22mm long), while drones and workers are smaller (13-17mm long). The bees are characterized by being black and yellow, and have a very fuzzy forehead. For comparison, other bumble bees are know to have white, orange, or red colouration. These bees have a wide host of plants including but not limited to: Astragalus, Cirsium, Meliotus, Rubus, Solidago, Trifolium, and Vicia. Most noteably they have a high affinity for clovers, blackberries and raspberries.
