Andrena milwaukeensis

Milwaukee mining bee

Andrena milwaukeensis, the Milwaukee mining bee is a mid sized bee 9-11mm in length found all across North America. This bee is active in early spring between the months of April and June, and feeds on the nectar of a vast range of early flowering plants. The species is solitary and nests in small underground chambers from summer to spring. Milwaukee mining bees are often described as “wearing a fox coat”, due to their colouration, slender appearance, and fuzziness. These bees frequent woodland areas and resemble small bumble bees. Early flowering plants heavily rely on them for polination, and their vast range of floral hosts ensures flowers of a wide range of plant species get visited in the early months.
